Disagree, tbh. Addiction is the aftermath of a poor choice, just as heart-disease might be the aftermath of poor diet and self-care.

Addicts need to be strong/self-motivated to overcome the result of an initial poor decision, but that’s true of any self-inflicted disease.

...and in that process they'll need love and support, and medical care -- not unlike a more conventional disease like cancer.

Addiction being viewed as a disease doesn’t remove accountability, but not viewing it as a disease is a perspective that lacks empathy.
